The relevant body will agree a range of seven consecutive points that fall within the appropriate Head Teacher Group, called the Individual Salary Range or ISR. The minimum of the ISR must be at least the next point higher on the leadership pay spine than the maximum of the pay range of any deputy or assistant head teacher at the school, and not less than the next leadership group pay spine above the salary of the highest paid classroom teacher (page 15).

Specific guidance on calculating the salary of the highest paid classroom teacher is also provided in the STPCD (page 16). If the relevant body needs to raise the ISR in order to retain this differential, it must raise it by no more than is necessary, ie, to ensure the minimum of the ISR exceeds by one point the maximum of the deputy or assistant head teacher range or the salary of the highest paid classroom teacher (page 15). The head teacher's annual salary must not be less than the minimum of the individual school range and must not exceed the maximum of the individual school.
