The School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) states that "subject to paragraph 51.9, no teacher employed part-time may be required to be available for work on any day of the week or part of any day of the week on which the teacher is not normally required to be available for work under their contract of employment (whether it is for the purposes of teaching pupils and performing other duties or for the sole purpose of performing other duties)" (Part 7, contractual framework for teachers, paragraph 51.9).

The activities arranged for PD days should be planned to ensure that all staff required to attend can.  If a teacher is required to attend and this PD day is outside their proportion of the directed time, this is voluntary and should be discussed and agreed with the teacher. The teacher is paid for the additional hours worked or time off in lieu is offered as an alternative, if they agree to attend.

Where the pattern of PD days in any year is such that more than the appropriate proportion fall on a part-time teacher's normal working days, consideration should be given as to whether it is necessary for the teacher to attend all of those PD days, or whether time off in lieu on another occasion or payment for the additional time be agreed.
